HIDDEN HIGHLANDS

Glasgow • Glencoe • Skye • Scenic Scotland

This itinerary is inspired by the element MIST

The Mist Crossing immerses you in the most atmospherically dramatic landscapes in Scotland — the misty passes of Glencoe, the cloud-wrapped peaks of the Cuillins on Skye, the fog-bound moorlands of Rannoch Moor, and the ethereal light of the west coast where rain and sun trade places a dozen times a day.

Yet this journey is about more than landscape alone. Along the way, it reveals the resilience, creativity and warmth of Scottish culture — communities, traditions and stories that have endured and adapted within these ever-changing environments for generations. This Crossing is designed for the traveller who understands that the most beautiful things are not always the most visible — and that Scotland's habit of concealment is not an obstacle but an invitation.

Glasgow

01/05

  1. Glasgow

Glasgow is Scotland's culture city: grittier, warmer, more surprising than Edinburgh.

Glasgow at dusk — tenement rooftops and church spires across the city
  2. Stirling

Stirling Castle — the “brooch that clasps the Highlands and Lowlands together”. Private tour with a local historian.

  3. Glencoe

Go on an easy 3 mile hike through ornamental woodland with a reflective lochan or try the more ambitious — Lost Valley (Coire Gabhail) hike with a stunning hidden valley.

A green glen between steep hillsides, pink wildflowers in the foreground
  4. Corrour

Arrive at Corrour Station — the highest and most remote railway station in Britain. As the train pulls away from Rannoch, the last trees disappear. You arrive at a place where there is nothing but moor, sky, and a single building.

  5. Isle of Skye

Scotland's Isle of Skye is a land carved from ancient myth and Atlantic winds. Here, towering basalt ridges like the Quiraing rise above emerald glens, while the jagged Cuillin mountains slice through shifting mist. It is a realm of wild, dramatic beauty — where rain feeds cascading waterfalls and silence feels timeless.

The Isle of Skye — a sea-cliff headland running out into the Atlantic
  6. The Full Crossing

The full crossing — Glasgow to Skye. Five regions, each its own weather, each its own reason to slow down.

Seasonal Highlights

Dawn mist across Glencoe in autumn, the landscape silver and gold

Snow on the Black Cuillins under low winter sun

November - February

Winter

Winter is when the Mist Crossing becomes most elemental. Snow dusts the Black Cuillins, Atlantic storms crash against Skye's coastline and low winter sun cuts through cloud at dramatic angles, creating some of the most extraordinary light of the year.

Highland waterfalls in spring, fed by winter rain

March - May

Spring

Spring is a season of renewal and transformation. Winter rains feed waterfalls across the Highlands, while Skye's Fairy Pools run crystal clear beneath the mountains. In Glencoe, the Three Sisters emerge from retreating snow, and lambing season brings new life to the glens.

June - August

Summer

Summer brings the Mist Crossing's longest days and most luminous landscapes. On Skye, golden hour seems to last for hours as soft evening light lingers across mountains, lochs and coastline.
